Figure 5.
Kaplunkin' with Kapuna
Note. As Kanaka grew tired and her time was near, she would give me a smack on my tricep and ask, “When did you get so good, kid?” and we would laugh. The video attached to this link shows a carousel post I made honoring Kanaka’s legacy, and the memory attached to kaplunkin’ (strumming ukulele) with her this night is a reminder of resilience. I felt her pride radiate into me as I picked up my uke and plucked something similar to the second video in the carousel. I would later use this tune, a rendition of “Lady of Spain”, I used at the conclusion of this project to serve as the melody for the lullaby included as the message on the back of my postcard to my daughter and Ohana. I hope that they will be able to see the postcard, feel it, smell it, listen, and engage with it beyond words—to not simply know of, but witness for themselves (Tracy, 2020).
I wanna sing you a tune,
One once played for me.
‘Bout how somethings true,
And some not what they seem.
But don’t start to think,
lil baby, just go to sleep
Go to sleep, go to sleep.
